Frequently asked questions

I extract natural gas (methane): ATECO code 06.20.00 or crude oil 06.10.00?
06.20.00, if you extract natural gas (methane, ethane, butane, propane), condensates and natural gas liquids, including drainage, separation and gas desulphurisation. This code also covers methane extraction from coal mines and hydraulic fracturing (fracking) for gas. Crude oil falls under 06.10.00, even when both are found in the same field.
Does gas desulphurisation and condensate extraction fall under the same ATECO code 06.20.00?
Yes. Gas desulphurisation, condensate extraction and separation of liquid hydrocarbon fractions all fall under 06.20.00, as part of raw natural gas production. If you extract solid coal such as lignite, the code is 05.20.00.
I carry out hydraulic fracturing (fracking) and test drilling for a gas company: ATECO code 06.20.00?
It depends on your role. Fracking to extract gas for your own account falls under 06.20.00, but if you perform test drilling and well services on a contract basis for the licence holder, those activities fall under support services to extraction, i.e. 09.10.00. What matters is whether you are extracting for yourself or working for others.
I liquefy gas for transport directly at the wellhead: does that still fall under ATECO code 06.20.00?
Yes, the liquefaction and regasification of natural gas carried out at the extraction site for transport purposes fall under 06.20.00. If you also extract crude oil from the same field, that falls under 06.10.00. On-site liquefaction remains part of gas production.
