Does a neighbourhood dry-cleaner use 96.10.21 or 96.10.22?
Use 96.10.21 if the service is carried out by the laundry or dry-cleaner, whether by machine or by hand. 96.10.22 is for self-service machines used directly by the customer.
Does washing rugs, curtains and drapes for private customers fall here?
Yes, the database includes the washing of rugs, carpets, curtains and drapes for non-industrial or non-commercial customers. If the work becomes general building cleaning, the comparison shifts to 81.21.00.
At my dry-cleaner I also do minor hemming and zip replacements on garments I wash: does the code change?
No, as long as repairs remain an add-on tied to the washing service, you stay on 96.10.21. If your main occupation becomes altering and repairing clothing — including for customers who don't have items laundered by you — that activity is better read as 95.29.30.
Laundry with coin-operated machines in the room but also a counter service where I collect and return clean items: which code prevails?
It depends on what drives the business. If customers use the coin-operated washing machines on their own, it is a self-service laundry 96.10.22; if the bulk of the work is the full-service operation you manage — collection, washing and ironing — you remain on 96.10.21.
