- chemical seed treatment through the application of pesticides, e.g. insecticides, rodenticides, fungicides
- drying, cleaning, grading and treating of seeds until they are marketed
- treatment of genetically modified seeds

Frequently asked questions
I clean and dry seeds for other farmers: ATECO code 01.63.20 or 01.63.10?
Usually 01.63.20, if you are processing seed destined for sowing: cleaning, grading, drying, dressing with plant-protection products and moisture reduction for storage. 01.63.20 covers only seeds for propagation. When you treat harvested produce intended for consumption or processing — cleaning and initial storage of cereals, threshing — the activity falls under post-harvest crop activities, i.e. 01.63.10.
Is chemical seed dressing with fungicides included in this ATECO code or is a separate activity needed?
Yes, dressing with plant-protection products (insecticides, rodenticides, fungicides) applied to seeds for sowing falls under 01.63.20, because the classification groups here all activities that improve seed propagation quality through to commercialisation. If you carry out field operations on behalf of other farmers instead, those crop production support services belong under 01.61.99.
I process seeds for sowing but I also produce cuttings and bulbs from a nursery: same ATECO code or two separate activities?
They are two distinct activities. Processing seeds for propagation — cleaning, grading, dressing — stays in 01.63.20, while producing cuttings, bulbs, grafts and seedlings from a nursery is plant reproduction, i.e. 01.30.00. The first processes an already-harvested seed; the second grows live propagating material.
I process genetically modified crop seeds: does that still fall under ATECO code 01.63.20?
Yes, processing genetically modified seeds intended for sowing is within 01.63.20, like all other seed-for-propagation operations. When you prepare the harvest for market instead — cleaning, trimming, drying fruit, vegetables or tobacco — the activity is post-harvest crop processing, i.e. 01.63.10.
