I trap wild animals for zoos or sell their pelts: ATECO hunting code 01.70.00 or livestock farming?
Yes, 01.70.00, when you catch wild animals for commercial purposes — live or dead — for meat, fur, hide, research, zoos or as pets. It also covers the production of pelts for the fur trade obtained through hunting. If you raise the animals yourself, use the corresponding livestock farming code — for example 01.48.20 for fur-bearing animals.
I carry out culls for wildlife management (wild boar, foxes): does that fall under ATECO code 01.70.00?
Yes, hunting for population control and the hunting of foxes, minks and wolves to protect livestock are in 01.70.00, along with frog catching and wild snail gathering. Sport and recreational hunting is not here: that falls under sporting activities. For captive breeding of game and other animals, see 01.48.99 instead.
I gather wild snails to sell: is that hunting 01.70.00 or snail farming as livestock?
Usually 01.70.00 if you collect snails in the wild — in fields or woodland: the gathering of wild snails is classified under hunting and trapping. If instead you farm them in enclosed areas with soil and plants (heliciculture), that is land snail farming, i.e. 01.48.99. What matters is whether you take them from the wild or raise them yourself.
I catch seals and walruses on land along the coast: ATECO hunting code 01.70.00 or fishing?
01.70.00, because the on-land capture of marine mammals such as seals and walruses falls under hunting. When the capture takes place at sea during fishing operations — for example whales — the code is marine fishing 03.11.00. The key factor is where and how the capture takes place: on land or in water.
