Frequently asked questions
I pack chamomile and peppermint herbal infusions into tea bags — is that ATECO code 10.83.01 or 10.83.02?
10.83.01. Blending tea and maté, extracts and preparations for infusions, and herbal tisanes such as peppermint, verbena and chamomile — including bagged or capsule formats — all belong here. Coffee processing has its own code: 10.83.02.
I make herbal blends for infusions — do I fall under 10.83.01 or under seasonings and spices?
10.83.01 when the product is a drink-ready infusion or herbal tea. If instead you process herbs as a culinary seasoning — drying and cutting them to flavour dishes — look to 10.84.00.
I produce compatible pods and capsules filled with tea and herbal blends — is that 10.83.01 or coffee processing?
10.83.01. Tea and herbal tisanes in bags, pods or capsules fall under this code. Capsules and pods filled with coffee follow 10.83.02 instead. What matters is what is inside the capsule, not the format itself.
I produce liquid extracts and concentrates of tea for the beverage industry — does that fall under 10.83.01?
Yes. Extracts and preparations based on tea or maté are explicitly listed in 10.83.01. However, if you use that extract to bottle a ready-to-drink beverage — such as bottled iced tea — that becomes the production of non-alcoholic beverages under division 11, no longer tea processing.
