When is IT consulting distinct from straightforward programming?
It is consulting when the value delivered is helping the client decide, design, or govern IT systems: requirements analysis, architecture, security, tool selection, technical audits, migrations, system integration, training, or specialist support. If the main output is ultimately writing and delivering code, the more direct code remains 62.10.00 - Computer programming activities.
If I work in cybersecurity, networking, and technical support, can I use 62.20.10?
It can apply when the activity is advisory: assessments, security plans, complex configurations, risk analysis, support for technical decisions. If instead you continuously manage a client's infrastructure, servers, operating environments, or ongoing services, you should also compare with 62.20.20 - IT infrastructure management activities.
I visit clients to set up and configure new PCs — is that IT consulting?
Usually not. If the work is installing and configuring personal computers and peripherals, the most direct code is 62.90.01 - Personal computer configuration. 62.20.10 comes into play when you sell the reasoning behind the choices: which machines to buy, how to integrate the systems, which architecture to adopt. Setting up a PC is one thing; designing the system is another.
I deliver in-company training and courses on business management software — does that fall under 62.20.10?
Only if the training is part of a broader consulting engagement on the client's system. If instead you provide IT training as a standalone service, or other IT services that are neither consulting nor programming nor infrastructure management, the residual code to consider is 62.90.09 - Other information technology and computer service activities n.e.c..
